December is here and, for many of us, that means Christmas Knitting. With the countdown on (only 19 days to go from here!), finding quick-knit projects and balancing time knitting with getting the house decorated, Christmas cookies made, and everything else involved with making many families’ Christmas preparations, it can get a bit hectic. I know it has been for me, and this year I’ve deliberately toned down all the nuttiness on myself by not making ANY of my Christmas presents (gasp! I know!). However, I’m optimistic that this year will be better for me and my family by virtue of my willingness to say “no” to the crazy, unrealistic expectations I typically put on myself at this time of year.
Does this mean I’ve set down the needles or even slowed my knitting project pace? Not at all! In fact, if you saw my project basket you’d wonder if I’m secretly knitting a gift or two (disclaimer: I’m really not!). But, I’m intentionally giving myself the freedom to say, “not tonight.” The Knitmore Girls are the ones who really inspired this in me with their “#Grinchalong” contest. For the month of December, there is no knitting for presents allowed – unless that due date is past December 25th. Their point is that it’s really too late to start anything new, and most knitters will drive ourselves insane getting projects done by Christmas Day. (I will admit to more than one Christmas Day containing a “I just have to get this seamed, and then you can wrap it” moment.)
I hope you join me in this. Let’s give ourselves all the gift of enjoying our Christmas this year by just saying “no” to Christmas Knitting. Check out the #grinchalong hashtag on Instagram to find other knitters giving ourselves a break this season.
