DellaQ Lily Straight Needle Roll
THE REVIEW
I came across DellaQ at Stitches West. I was taken by the colors and the apparent ease of needle organization. I’ve been knitting long enough that I’ve accumulated a fair number of needles and keeping them organized had become a real challenge. In fact, it was to the point that I purchased additional sets of needles, only to later go through and re-organize my materials and discover that I was now the proud owner of multiple sets of the same size needle! I bought the Lily Straight Needle Case with the hope that it would hold all my needles and that I could get a bit better organized.
INITIAL REACTIONS: When I got my case home, I was pretty excited. I pulled it out of its plastic wrap casing, and just played with it. My first impression is that this case is really well-constructed with many thoughtful details. I especially appreciate that each size location is clearly tagged and that the pockets go three-levels deep. The pockets appear to be a good size (and they get larger as you go up in needle size), but I wasn’t sure that the roll would close nicely once I had all my needles placed in the organizer.
THE TESTS: I grabbed all my needles and wasn’t sure I was going to be able to fit them all. It was a lot of needles! I took my time and put them in, and realized that I had nearly every pocket filled up to a size 15. All told, it’s probably about 75% filled. I rolled up the organizer and tied it shut. I was really surprised at how slim the profile was even with all my needles in it. It tied off nicely, and it fits perfectly in my knitting trunk.
The real payoff for me has been when I start a new project. I now feel almost like a chef every time I go to get my needles to cast on for a new project. I unroll all my needles, select the ones I’m using for my swatch or my project and roll my needles back up. There is something special about going in and selecting my tools that helps raise my excitement level about my new project.
If I were to critique anything about the Lily Straight Needle case, it’s that it shows me exactly what needles – and in what lengths – I don’t yet own. I’ve been fighting the urge to go out and buy new needles until I have a project I need them for, but I can already feel my will weakening!
