Stephen & Steven
I had to go buy some knitting needles on Sunday this week, and brought my family with me to my local yarn shop. When we got there, they had sign in front announcing that the Steven and Stephen tour was going to be there that afternoon. I was incredibly disappointed that I had somehow missed the email notifications and the opportunity to sign up to take a class and meet them. (My husband’s reaction? Who’s that? Knitting Celebrities? Really?) I went inside to buy some needles and there was a gorgeous outlay of Hedgehog Fibers and other yarns from the trunk show. After some chat with the store personnel, they mentioned that another class had been added for Tuesday due to the high demand. Naturally, I snapped up my seat on the spot! Tuesday morning I arrived bright and early, and Steven and Stephen were sitting outside, soaking up some of our gorgeous California sunshine. Once the store opened and the class started, they began taking us through a fashion show of their samples for patterns included with the class. I love d seeing how they put colors and textures together in such interesting ways. I love ponchos, so I selected the Scribblechini Ponchini. Next came the shopping, and they were with us every step of the way for color selection. For me, picking out the main yarn I was going to use was easy, but selecting the complementary colors was more challenging. Steven Be made that easy, and his choices were great! I also learned a great little tip – did you know that you can wind a ball of SILK YARN? No, really! Stephen West showed me how to do it. You simply fold pieces of Kleenex in to the ball as it is wound. It creates grip that keeps the ball together. Genius! From there, it was a straight knitting exercise. I consulted with Steven Be about the number of stitches to cast-on, and I decided to cast on 44 stitches, a little larger than the standard pattern. I’ve used sized 15 needles before, so it was just a matter of finding my rhythm again. While we were knitting, Steven Be had us pull out completed projects that we brought to brag about and we shared those around the room. It was nice – I got to meet some new knitters, I met some knitting celebrities (bucket list item – check!), and I am absolutely in love with my Scribblechini Ponchini. I want to get it finished in time to wear it to StitchesWest this weekend. I think that’s achievable, as it’s a fast knit.
